Victoria’s fastest-growing municipality

receives new shelters and picnic facilities.

South-east of Melbourne, the City of Casey is one of Victoria’s largest and fastest-growing municipality.

Home to a remarkable diversity of cultures, languages, faiths, identities, landscapes, and stories, from our first Australians to our most recent arrivals and every wave between, the City of Casey welcomes and represents all community members and their respective ambitions to live healthy, rewarding, and happy lives.

In early 2020, the Senior Landscape Architect from the City of Casey enquired with Terrain Group:

“I’m planning to construct a (very) long shelter in one of our reserves – approx. 18 metres x 4 metres. Would you be able to suggest a shelter from your range that I could have customised? Or would it make no difference if it’s a 100% custom design? It would have a long picnic table underneath.
I need to balance budget and timing – it would have to be installed in the next 3 months.”

Shortly after, Terrain Group commenced negotiation with the council, working on a structure and style that would best fit the budget and project delivery time frame. In this case, the Capricorn was the most versatile option to provide the solution that the client was seeking.

“From start to finish the process with Terrain Group was flawless, fantastic communication from Jayne and the crew. The installation and drawings provided were easy to understand and very accurate.”

The structure was designed to incorporate a shaded area beneath the shelter plus an arbour-style extension. Moving forward on this proposal, our drafting division developed scalable, site-specific renders and multiple options to meet the client’s request. These were shared amongst council members and the final selection was incorporated into the tender documentation in mid-2020.

As the project worked through the tender stages and was awarded, Terrain Group prepared the engineering drawings, building permit and final drawings, carrying out all documentation and Form 126.

As soon as the building permit was processed, the council were able to undertake and delegate the building and development works for the site. The shelter structure was procured from Terrain Group and the winning tenderer for the landscape works was engaged to install the shelter.

Collaborating with Super Gardens, the winning landscape contractor, the shelter was proposed to be installed prior to any major landscape works. Delivered to site as a flat-packed kit by our dedicated furniture carrier team, the shade structure and a fully assembled table setting units were ready to be installed.

Elements Monaco Table Setting

2 of our Elements Monaco table settings sit beneath the shelter, each 5.5 metres in length, featuring hardwood timber planks, powder-coated frame and legs in Black Satin finish, 316 stainless steel fixings, set at standard height and provision of 2 accessible spaces to bench areas.

One of our largest custom designs, we are extremely proud of the result, having met the requirements of the council and delivering on their vision. Furthermore, we were able to achieve this by taking one of our standard designs and customising it to accommodate the council’s budget.

A project like this only reflects our capabilities in-house at Terrain Group and shows how we work alongside the client right from the beginning. This design reflects a great use of space and offers the community a communal picnic area to accommodate family and friends. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to see a client happy, a quality product and an end result that is receiving community praises all around.
